Game description:

Millipede is Atari’s 1982 arcade shooter and the direct sequel to Centipede. You guide a small gun through a mushroom-filled field as a segmented millipede descends from the top โ€” shoot every segment to clear the wave. Unlike Centipede, you can move freely across the entire field rather than being pinned to the bottom. Earwigs, beetles, dragonflies, and bees join the millipede as the game progresses, each with distinct movement that changes how each wave plays out.

How to Play

Move with the arrow keys; X fires upward. Earwigs travel with the millipede and leave poisoned mushrooms in their wake โ€” a poisoned mushroom causes the millipede to dive straight down rather than zigzagging. The more poisoned mushrooms accumulate between waves, the worse the dives get. DDT barrels appear in later stages: one shot detonates them, destroying all enemies and mushrooms in the blast radius.

Controls: arrow keys to move, X to fire (NES A), Z (NES B), Enter to start.

Tips

  • Target earwigs the moment they appear โ€” their poisoned mushroom trails compound wave over wave and make the millipede’s descent far harder to manage.
  • Move up into the field to intercept the millipede higher; you are not confined to the bottom as in Centipede.
  • Save DDT detonations for when beetles or bees cluster near the millipede โ€” a well-placed shot can wipe most of a wave at once.
