Game description:

Fighting Golf (released in the US as Lee Trevino’s Fighting Golf) is a golf sports game developed and published by SNK for arcades in 1988, and ported to the NES the same year. This is the US arcade revision, and it plays like the original cabinet: pick a golfer, choose a course, and work your way around avoiding sand traps, water, rough grass and trees to post the lowest score.

How to Play

Choose one of four golfers before you start, each trading power for control: Pretty Amy hits short but is the easiest to line up, Big Jumbo hits the farthest but is the hardest to control, and Super Mex (Lee Trevino) and Miracle Chosuke sit in between with more balanced stats. Two courses are on offer โ€” a US layout modelled on the PGA West Stadium Course, and a tighter Japanese course built around water hazards. In the browser: use the arrow keys to aim your shot, Z to cycle clubs and viewing angle, and X to start and time your swing โ€” hold it to wind up and release to strike, with a longer hold putting more power into the shot. Shift inserts a coin and Enter starts the game.

Tips

  • Match your golfer to the course: Big Jumbo’s extra distance is tempting, but his poor control makes him a liability on the tight Japanese course โ€” Pretty Amy or Miracle Chosuke’s balance is safer there.
  • Putt with restraint: the green uses the same hold-longer-for-more-power swing, so short, controlled taps beat long holds once you’re close to the hole.
  • Lay up rather than gamble: trees and heavy rough sap your distance and can deflect the ball entirely, so it’s often safer to stop short of a hazard than to try cutting the corner.
