Diver Boy is a 1992 arcade game by Electronic Devices that plays like an underwater spin on Bomb Jack. Instead of jumping, you control a diver who naturally floats to the surface and sinks when you press the dive button. You must navigate past deadly fish, sharks, and sea mines to open clam shells and collect the pearls hidden inside, occasionally finding power-ups like a protective shield or a harpoon-equipped mini-submarine to take on the end-of-stage bosses.
How to Play
Your goal is to collect all the target items in the underwater stage without getting hit by enemies. The controls use a unique gravity mechanic: your diver always floats upwards. Use the Action button to dive toward the sea floor, and let go to ascend again. Use the joystick or D-pad to steer left and right as you move vertically to avoid creatures and line up with the clam shells.
Tips
- Control your depth: Tapping the action button instead of holding it lets you hover in place, which is crucial for maneuvering around tight clusters of enemies.
- Grab the submarine: Some bubbles contain a yellow mini-submarine. This temporary power-up gives you free movement and the ability to shoot harpoons, making it much easier to clear out enemies.
- Watch the clock: Don’t dawdle while collecting pearls. If you take too long to finish a stage, an invincible devil character will appear and chase you down.
