Why does my Game Boy Advance have a little switch inside the cartridge slot?

I was cleaning out the cartridge slot of my GBA with a cotton swab and noticed there's a tiny physical switch hidden down there. What does this switch actually do? I've never seen anything like it on other consoles.

    Just to add to this, the switch actually changes the voltage. GBA games run on 3.3 volts, but the older Game Boy and Game Boy Color hardware requires 5 volts. Flipping that switch changes the power delivery and activates the secondary processor inside the GBA so it can run the older games natively.

    That switch is how the GBA knows whether to run in Game Boy Advance mode or Game Boy / Game Boy Color mode. Older GB and GBC cartridges are physically shaped differently than GBA games. When you push an older, larger cartridge into the slot, it physically presses down on that switch, telling the system's processor to boot up in backwards-compatibility mode. GBA games have a notch that avoids hitting the switch.
