What is the actual difference between PSP 1000, 2000, and 3000?

I'm looking to buy a PSP to play some older games, but I keep seeing these different model numbers. They all look basically the same to me except maybe the weight. Does it matter which one I get to play games?

    The main differences are the screen, weight, and RAM. The original 1000 (the 'Phat') is heavier and thicker but feels really solid. The 2000 (Slim & Lite) doubled the RAM from 32MB to 64MB which helps games load faster and added TV-out support. The 3000 kept the slim design but added a built-in microphone and a new screen with better colors, though some people complain the 3000 screen has noticeable scanlines.

    Don't forget the PSP Go! It's completely different from the 1000/2000/3000. It slides up, has no UMD drive at all (digital only), and uses 16GB of internal memory. But if you want to use physical discs, definitely aim for a 2000 or 3000 model.

    If you are just playing games off UMDs or an SD card adapter, any of them will play the whole library. The extra RAM on the 2000 and 3000 doesn't make games run at a higher framerate, but it does significantly cut down on load times for certain games that take advantage of it.
