Zero Wing is a classic side-scrolling shoot ’em up developed by Toaplan and released for the Sega Genesis in 1991. While famously known for its badly translated "All your base are belong to us" intro in the European release, this specific version features a text hack by Vincent404 that corrects the English localization. Players control the ZIG starfighter to defend the universe from the cyborg CATS and his alien forces.
How to Play
Pilot your spacecraft through horizontal stages, shooting down enemy waves and dodging hazards. A defining feature of Zero Wing is the tractor beam, which allows you to capture smaller enemy ships or objects. Once captured, they can be held in front of your ship to absorb incoming fire or launched back at enemies as a powerful projectile.
Controls for the Sega Genesis are the D-pad to move, A, B, and C for firing and the tractor beam, and Start to pause. These are mapped in your browser to the arrow keys for movement, Z, X, and C for your ship’s actions, and Enter for Start.
Tips
- Always try to have an enemy or object captured with your tractor beam. It acts as an invaluable forward shield against enemy projectiles.
- Don’t rush to throw your captured enemy. Keeping it as a shield is often more beneficial than using it as a one-time projectile, especially during boss fights.
- Collect the red, blue, and green power-ups to cycle between the scatter shot, laser, and homing missiles respectively. Stick with one type to upgrade its power rather than constantly switching.
