Yume Penguin Monogatari is a highly original 1991 platform and shoot-'em-up game developed by Konami for the Famicom (NES). The game follows Penta, a penguin whose girlfriend Penko has left him because he has gained too much weight. To win her back, Penta must travel through various stages while keeping his weight down, avoiding enemies sent by his rival Ginji who try to force-feed him.
How to Play
The core mechanic is the weight meter at the bottom of the screen. Enemies will throw food at youโeating it makes Penta fatter, slowing him down and changing his attacks. Collecting diet drinks makes him lose weight. At the end of each stage, Penko will judge your weight; if you are too fat, you will be rejected and have to retry the stage. The game alternates between traditional platforming levels and horizontal scrolling shooter segments.
Default controls for NES games in the browser are the Arrow Keys for movement (D-pad), Z for the B button (attack), X for the A button (jump), Enter for Start, and Shift for Select.
Tips
- Watch your attacks: Penta's attacks change based on his weight. When thin, he can shoot projectiles or kick, but when overweight, his range is severely limited to a belly flop.
- Avoid the food: Enemies don't just deal damage; they actively try to feed you. Dodging flying food is often more critical than defeating the enemies themselves.
