Game description:

Youkai Douchuuki (also known as Shadow Land) is a 1988 action-platformer developed by Namco for the NES. Originally an arcade title that never saw a Western release on home consoles, the game follows a young boy named Tarosuke on a journey through Jigoku, the Japanese underworld. Blending traditional side-scrolling platforming with light adventure elements, you must battle mischievous spirits, collect money, and purchase upgrades from shops to survive the treacherous path to final judgment.

How to Play

Your objective is to guide Tarosuke through five stages of the underworld to meet Buddha, where your actions will determine which of the multiple endings you receive. Use the D-pad to move and aim. Press A to jump and B to fire your spirit projectiles (mapped to the Arrow keys, Z, and X on your keyboard).

Tips

  • Manage your money: Collect the currency dropped by defeated enemies. You will need it to buy essential health items and stronger attacks at the shrines and shops along the way.
  • Charge your attacks: You can hold the attack button to unleash a more powerful energy blast, which is crucial for taking down tougher demons and bosses.
  • Your behavior matters: The ending you get is influenced by how you play, particularly in the final stage. Being overly greedy or aggressive can lead to a worse fate for Tarosuke.
