Xx Mission (also known as Mission XX) is a classic vertical-scrolling shoot ’em up released by UPL in 1986 for the arcades. Piloting a fighter jet modeled after the F-14 Tomcat, players fly over changing landscapes to battle enemy aircraft and destroy ground targets. The game shares similarities with titles like Xevious, giving you both an air-to-air laser and an unlimited air-to-ground bombing attack to manage two layers of combat simultaneously.
How to Play
Your objective is to survive the scrolling stages while taking out as many airborne and ground-based enemies as possible to rack up a high score. Use the Arrow keys to maneuver your jet around enemy fire. Press the Z key to shoot your primary aerial lasers and the X key to drop bombs on ground installations. Press Enter to start the game (insert coin) and Shift if a separate select button is needed.
Tips and Strategy
- Watch your wings: Moving up the screen causes your jet’s wings to sweep back, while moving down spreads them out. This changes your hitbox, so sweep your wings back when you need to squeeze through tight bullet patterns.
- Manage your shots: Both your air and ground attacks share a fire limit, meaning only a few bullets can be on the screen at once. Be deliberate with your aiming instead of blindly mashing the fire buttons.
- Look for power-ups: Destroy specific ground targets marked “WAP” to reveal star-shaped items. Collecting these provides a temporary 40-second upgrade to your weaponry, offering wider and more powerful attacks depending on your wing configuration.
