Game description:

Xexex (played here in its original Japanese arcade version, “Ver JAA”) is a 1991 side-scrolling shoot ’em up developed by Konami. As a standout title of its era, it pushes arcade hardware with striking pseudo-3D visual effects and a unique biorganic aesthetic. The gameplay centers entirely around the “Flint,” a detachable, glowing orb that serves as both your primary weapon and a shield.

Your objective is to pilot the Flintlock fighter through multiple stages to rescue Princess Irene from the evil Lord Klaus. As an arcade title, standard controls apply in the browser: use the arrow keys to maneuver, the Z key to fire your main weapon or deploy and recall the Flint, Shift to insert coins, and Enter to start the game.

  • The Flint is completely invulnerable. When attached to the front of your ship, it absorbs most incoming enemy bullets, acting as an essential defensive barrier.
  • Launching the Flint into clusters of enemies or larger targets will continuously damage them, and its attack behavior changes based on which weapon power-up you have collected.
  • This Japanese release uses a traditional lives system and checkpoint respawns, demanding more careful positioning and stage memorisation than the lifebar system found in international versions.
