Worms is a turn-based artillery strategy game developed by Team17 and published by Ocean for the Sega Genesis in 1995. Two teams of cartoon earthworms square off across fully destructible terrain, armed with bazookas, grenades, dynamite, and a rotating arsenal of specialist weapons. Players alternate turns — walk a worm into position, pick a weapon, aim, and fire. The side that eliminates every enemy worm wins.
How to Play
Move your active worm with the arrow keys. Cycle through weapons using S (A button), then angle your shot with the up and down arrows. Hold Z (C button) to set launch power and release to fire. Press X (B button) to jump; double-tap for a backflip that covers more ground. Check the wind meter before each shot — wind pushes every projectile, and a strong crosswind can send a bazooka rocket well off target.
Tips
- Compensate for crosswinds by aiming slightly into them, or switch to close-range options like dynamite or a short-fused grenade to cut out the drift entirely.
- Grenades bounce off terrain before detonating — use this to arc one through a cave entrance or around a wall to reach a sheltered enemy.
- End every turn behind cover. A worm left in the open is an easy target the moment the next turn begins.
