Released by Capcom in 1989, Willow is a fast-paced side-scrolling action-platformer based on the George Lucas fantasy film. Unlike the action-RPG released on the NES, the Arcade version focuses on run-and-gun platforming and hack-and-slash combat. Across six challenging stages, you alternate playing as Willow Ufgood, who uses magical projectile attacks, and the swordsman Madmartigan, who relies on powerful close-range melee strikes. Defeating enemies and opening chests drops gold coins that can be spent at the Owl Mage’s shops to purchase vital weapon upgrades, health, and magic.
How to Play
The objective is to battle through enemy forces, survive the treacherous stages, and defeat the evil sorceress Queen Bavmorda. Controls: Use the directional keys to move, duck, and haul yourself up ledges. Press Z to attack and X to jump. Holding down the attack button allows you to charge up a stronger magic or sword attack based on your character’s power gauge. Press Enter or Shift to Start and Insert Coin.
Tips for Success
- Don’t linger in shops: The level timer is very fast and does not pause while you browse the Owl Mage’s shop. Make your purchases quickly to avoid losing a life to a timeout.
- Master the charge attack: Managing the power gauge to unleash strong charge shots is critical for clearing out tough enemies from a distance, especially during boss fights.
- Save gold for key upgrades: Prioritize purchasing weapon range upgrades and health replenishments to survive the brutal later stages.
