Where in the World Is Carmen Sandiego? is an educational detective game for the Sega Genesis (1988). You play as a rookie ACME detective chasing members of Carmen Sandiego’s V.I.L.E. crime syndicate from city to city around the world. The series’ signature hook is its clue system: witnesses describe a suspect’s next move in geographic terms — currency, spoken language, local landmarks, national flags — and you have to know, or learn, which country they’re pointing to.
How to play
Each case gives you a starting city and a criminal to track down. Fly between locations, interview witnesses, and log clues about the suspect’s appearance and destination. When your evidence firmly names a suspect and pins down their current city, issue an arrest warrant through Interpol and make the collar before time runs out. Solving cases earns you promotions at ACME, unlocking longer, more globe-spanning assignments as you climb the ranks.

Tips
- Keep a notepad beside you. Clues arrive one city at a time and compound quickly — jotting down eliminated options saves expensive backtracking flights.
- Think in regions before countries. A clue like “they speak Portuguese” still covers multiple continents; wait for the next clue before booking a flight.
- Issue the arrest warrant the moment you have identified the suspect, even if you are one city behind — the window to make the arrest closes faster than it looks.
