Game description:

Vigilante 8 is a vehicular combat game developed by Luxoflux and published by Activision, brought to the Nintendo 64 in this French PAL release. Set in a stylized version of 1970s America gripped by an oil crisis, it puts players behind the wheel of armed cars, trucks, and other vehicles, battling across wide-open arenas in a style often compared to Twisted Metal. Two rival factions, the Vigilantes and the Coyotes, supply the game’s roster of drivers, each piloting a distinct vehicle equipped with its own primary weapon.

How to play

Pick a driver and either work through the single-player Quest mode’s story missions or jump straight into deathmatch-style Arcade battles. The goal in each match is to destroy or outlast the opposing vehicles using your car’s built-in weapon plus any special weapons picked up around the arena. On a standard N64 layout, the analog stick steers, A accelerates, B reverses or brakes, and Z fires your weapon; in the browser these map to the arrow keys plus Z and X.

Tips

  • Weapon pickups scattered around each arena are usually stronger than your vehicle’s default gun — grab them before rivals do.
  • Use the arena’s ramps and jumps to dodge ground-hugging weapons like mines and to land hits on enemies from above.
