V-Five (also known as VใปV in Japan) is a vertical-scrolling shoot ’em up developed by Toaplan and released in arcades in 1993. As the Japanese version of the game that would become known internationally as Grind Stormer, it plays significantly differently from its Western counterpart. Instead of collecting specific weapon items and bombs, V-Five uses a selectable power-up meter reminiscent of Gradius or Toaplan’s earlier Slap Fight. Players gather diamond-shaped gems from defeated enemies to advance the meter, choosing when to lock in speed upgrades, different shot types, or options.
How to Play
Pilot your ship through intense waves of enemy fighters, dodging dense bullet patterns and destroying large mechanical bosses. You begin with a standard forward shot and can build your arsenal by collecting gems and activating the power-up highlighted on your selection bar. Since this is an arcade game, press Shift to insert coins and Enter to start. Use the Arrow Keys to maneuver your ship, press Z to fire your current weapon, and press X to confirm your selected power-up.
Tips
- Manage your meter: Do not just activate the first power-up you can afford. Save your gems for the more powerful shot types or options, but do not hold out so long that you get overwhelmed by enemies.
- Search, Search, Search: The “Search” weapon provides homing missiles that are incredibly useful for dealing with popcorn enemies while you focus on dodging incoming fire.
- Keep moving: Like many Toaplan shooters that paved the way for the “bullet hell” genre, standing still is a death sentence. Make small, controlled movements to weave through enemy attacks.
