Developed by Rainbow Arts Software and released for the Sega Genesis in 1990, Turrican is a run-and-gun platformer famous for its massive, non-linear levels and technical ambition. Instead of forcing you down a single corridor, the game drops you into sprawling, multi-directional environments filled with alien mechanical forces, hidden secrets, and an expansive arsenal of upgradeable weapons.
How to play
Your goal is to navigate the maze-like levels, survive enemy encounters, and reach the exit before time runs out. The Genesis controls map directly to your keyboard: use the Arrow Keys to move and aim. Press X (the B button) to fire your main weapon and Z (the C button) to jump. You can activate your lightning whip by holding S (the A button) and using the directional keys to sweep the 360-degree beam around yourself.
Tips
- Hold the lightning whip button and sweep it around the screen to easily reveal invisible blocks containing power-ups and extra lives.
- You can transform into the invincible Energy Wheel to pass through narrow spaces and damage enemies by pressing Down while jumping, but you only get a limited number of uses per life.
- Focus on consistently collecting the Spread shot power-up, as its wide area of effect is incredibly reliable for surviving the huge, enemy-filled environments.
