Turbo OutRun is a 1992 arcade racing sequel brought to the Sega Genesis by Sega. Leaving behind the branching European roads of the original, this entry straps you into a Ferrari F40 for a straightforward, high-speed race across the United States from New York to Los Angeles. Along with the change in scenery, the game introduces a limited-use turbo boost and a persistent rival driving a Porsche 959 who you must beat to the next checkpoint.
How to Play
The objective is to beat the clock to each checkpoint while staying ahead of your rival and avoiding traffic. You steer with the D-pad, accelerate and brake with the face buttons, and activate your signature turbo boost with the C button (mapped to Enter, Shift, or Z/X in the browser depending on your setup). Between stages, you can upgrade your car with a better engine, specialized tires, or a more powerful turbo.
Tips
- Watch your engine temperature meter; using the turbo boost continuously will cause it to overheat, leaving you crawling until it cools down.
- Save your turbo for long, straight sections of the highway, or use short bursts to quickly recover top speed after a crash.
- Upgrading to high-grip tires should be your priority at the first shop, as it makes navigating tight corners at high speeds much more forgiving.
