Traverse USA, also known by its original Japanese title Zippy Race, is a 1983 arcade racing game developed by Irem. In this cross-country rally, players hop on a motorcycle to race from Los Angeles to New York City, shifting between two distinct perspectives. The majority of the journey plays as a fast-paced, top-down vertical scroller where you weave through heavy traffic and dodge environmental hazards. As you close in on each destination city, the viewpoint drops down to a pseudo-3D perspective behind the rider, testing your reflexes against oncoming cars.
How to Play
Your goal is to reach New York City before your fuel gauge runs dry. Insert a coin and press start (mapped to Shift and Enter), then use the Arrow Keys to steer your motorcycle. Press Z to accelerate and pass cars to boost your rank, and use X to apply the brakes and avoid collisions. You must grab the fuel barrels scattered along the highway to keep your bike running.
Tips
- Master the brakes: High speeds make the bike much harder to control. Don’t be afraid to brake when the road narrows or when navigating tight clusters of cars.
- Watch the terrain: In the top-down sections, off-road obstacles like cacti and boulders will instantly crash your bike. Stay on the paved road whenever possible.
- Prioritize fuel: Fuel constantly depletes, so passing cars for a higher score should never come at the expense of missing a fuel barrel.
