Toei Sonic 3 & Knuckles is a Sega Genesis platformer hack that gives the iconic mascot a fresh coat of paint. This fan-made modification replaces Sonic’s standard sprites with custom artwork inspired by the Toei Animation sequences seen in Sonic CD. The result is a more expressive, stylized look that perfectly complements the high-speed gameplay, sprawling levels, and complete lock-on campaign of the original 16-bit classic.
How to Play
Speed through each zone, collect rings, and smash badniks to stop Dr. Robotnik from repairing his Death Egg. The game uses standard Sega Genesis controls: move with the D-pad and press A, B, or C to jump. Pressing a jump button again in mid-air activates Sonic’s Insta-Shield or the special ability of your current elemental shield. When playing in your browser, the D-pad is mapped to your arrow keys, and the action buttons are mapped to Z, X, and C.
Tips
- Each elemental shield completely changes your mid-air options: use the Fire Shield to dash forward, the Water Shield to bounce and breathe underwater, and the Lightning Shield for a double jump and ring attraction.
- If you’re playing as Knuckles, keep an eye out for breakable walls that Sonic can’t get through; they often lead to unique pathways and different boss encounters.
