Game description:

Thunder Force IV (also known as Lightening Force: Quest for the Darkstar in North America) is a legendary horizontally scrolling shoot ’em up released for the Sega Genesis in 1992 by Technosoft. Widely considered a masterpiece of the 16-bit era, it pushes the console to its limits with sprawling multi-layered environments, massive screen-filling bosses, and an iconic, blistering heavy metal soundtrack.

How to Play

Take control of the advanced Rynex starfighter to dismantle the remnants of the Ohn Empire. Use the arrow keys to move, Z to fire, X to switch between your acquired weapons, and C to adjust your ship’s speed on the fly. You begin with basic forward and backward shots, but can collect power-ups like the Blade or Hunter to expand your arsenal, switching between them to suit the situation.

Tips

  • Manage your speed: Toggling your ship’s speed (with the C key) is essential. Use higher speeds for wide-open dodging and lower speeds for precision weaving in tight corridors.
  • Weapon switching: Different weapons excel in different areas. The Snake is great for covering the screen, while the Free Way is devastating when firing diagonally.
  • Protect the Claw: When you acquire the Claw power-up (orbiting satellites), it provides extra firepower and can absorb one enemy hit. Keep them safe, as they make boss fights significantly easier.
