Game description:

Developed by On-Line Systems in 1981, Threshold brings wave-based shooting to the Atari 2600. Originally a computer release inspired by arcade titles like Astro Blaster, this console port drops the heat management gauge of the original but retains the core challenge: surviving an endless barrage of alien ships that swoop in with highly varied, erratic movement patterns.

How to play

You control a spaceship at the bottom of the screen, tasked with clearing each unique wave of enemies to advance. Unlike many shooters of the era, your ship can move vertically within the lower half of the screen as well as horizontally, allowing you to aggressively push up or dodge incoming fire.

Tips

  • Keep moving constantly. Enemy movement patterns change drastically between waves, and staying still will quickly result in a collision.
  • Use your vertical movement to your advantage. Pushing up into the playfield can give you a better angle on evasive enemies or help you escape a cornered situation.
  • Pay attention to the timer. Taking too long to clear a wave will deplete your fuel, costing you a life.
  • You can activate a warp drive once per life by pulling back (down) on the joystick to escape imminent danger.
