Developed by Virgin Interactive in 1994, The Lion King is a Sega Genesis action platformer notorious for its unforgiving difficulty. Featuring fluid animation crafted by actual Disney animators, the game follows Simba’s journey from a vulnerable cub dodging rhinos to a full-grown lion battling Scar. It demands precise timing and rote memorisation to survive its punishing level design.
How to Play
As a cub, Simba relies on his roar to stun bugs and lizards, and pounces to defeat them. Adult Simba gains lethal swipe and throw attacks to fight hyenas and adult leopards. The default keyboard controls for this Sega Genesis title are:
- Arrow Keys: Move (Up to look up, Down to crouch)
- S: Jump
- X: Swipe (Adult Simba) / Pounce
- Z: Roar
- Enter: Start
Tips
- In the “Can’t Wait to Be King” level, pay close attention to the monkeys’ arm positions to anticipate which way they will toss you.
- When playing as adult Simba, use the throw move (swipe while near an enemy) to quickly dispatch hyenas without taking damage.
- The rolling logs in the “Hakuna Matata” waterfall section fall in a fixed pattern; memorise the sequence rather than trying to react on the fly.
