The King of Fighters ’96 is SNK’s 1996 arcade fighting game, the third entry in the King of Fighters series, running on the Neo Geo MVS hardware. It kept the series’ signature 3-on-3 team battle format but redrew every character from scratch, added the ability to run instead of hop toward an opponent, and replaced the old dodge move with a roll-based “emergency evasion” that can carry a fighter past the opponent to the other side. The story follows a new tournament staged by Chizuru Kagura to draw out Kyo Kusanagi and his rival Iori Yagami, with teams like the Hero Team, Fatal Fury Team, Art of Fighting Team, and the villain-stacked Rivals Team all vying for the crown.
How to Play
Pick a team of three fighters and knock out the opposing team one member at a time by draining their health bar in one-on-one rounds. In the browser, the arrow keys work the joystick, while Z, X, C, and V map to the four attack buttons (light punch, light kick, strong punch, and strong kick). Press Enter to start and Shift to insert a coin. Tap forward twice to run in on an opponent, and press a direction with a punch and kick together to roll â useful for closing distance or ducking past a projectile.
Tips
- Hold guard and press toward or away from the opponent with a punch and kick button together to guard-cancel into an emergency evasion, escaping pressure instead of just blocking it out.
- Super Special Moves become available once the power gauge is full, and a stronger version unlocks if your life bar is also flashing red â worth saving your gauge for that window.
- A rolling character can still be thrown, so don’t roll right next to an opponent who can punish the recovery.
