The King of Fighters 2002 is a 2D fighting game released for the Neo Geo arcade system (MVS/AES) on October 10, 2002, developed by Eolith and published by Playmore. It is the series’ second “dream match” entry â following The King of Fighters ’98 â abandoning the ongoing storyline to bring together a huge cast of 39 selectable fighters (plus hidden characters) spanning the franchise’s history, including several who hadn’t appeared since ’98. Teams of three battle it out in fast, combo-heavy 2D fights, and the sheer size of the roster is the game’s biggest draw.
How to Play
Matches are fought 3-on-3: pick a team of three fighters and knock out the opposing team one member at a time. KOF 2002 drops the “Strikers” system used in the two previous entries and returns to a Power Gauge setup closer to KOF ’97 â each team member adds an extra gauge stock to your pool, so your first fighter can hold up to three stocks and your third up to five. Filling the gauge lets you unleash a Super Special Move, or activate MAX Mode for a temporary boost that lets you cancel freely between attacks and throw out Super Special Moves without spending a stock; with a second stock and low health, even stronger MAX2 supers become available.
Default Browser Controls:
- Insert Coin: Shift (or 5)
- Start: Enter (or 1)
- Move: Arrow Keys
- Light Punch / Light Kick / Strong Punch / Strong Kick: Z, X, C, V
Tips
- Build your team order around gauge capacity: since your third fighter can bank up to five power stocks against your first fighter’s three, put a character whose supers or MAX2 you lean on heavily later in the lineup so they have more meter to work with.
- Save meter for MAX Mode: rather than spending a stock the moment it’s full, holding it for MAX Mode lets you combo into a Super Special Move for free and opens up bigger damage than a standalone special.
- Watch your health for MAX2 openings: once you’re low and holding two stocks, MAX2 supers hit much harder â a dangerous comeback tool worth saving meter for instead of burning it early.
