Game description:

Released by Accolade in 1990 for DOS, Test Drive III: The Passion marked a major shift for the racing series by moving from sprite-based scaling to a fully 3D polygonal environment. This approach allows for true cross-country driving where you can veer off the main roads to find shortcuts or explore the open terrain. You take the wheel of concept cars and high-performance exotics, racing against the clock and rival drivers while dodging traffic and evading the police.

How to play

Your goal is to complete the scenic routes within the time limit while outrunning the competition and avoiding tickets from the highway patrol. The game is controlled by the standard keys you would use under MS-DOS, typically the arrow keys for steering, acceleration, and braking. For a better view of the road, press ‘Right Alt’ + ‘Enter’ to toggle fullscreen mode.

Tips

  • Use the terrain: Unlike earlier entries in the series, there are no invisible walls. Cutting across fields or taking dirt roads can shave precious seconds off your time.
  • Watch your speed around cops: Police cars patrol the roads and will pull you over for speeding. Keep an eye on your radar detector to slow down in time and avoid costly tickets.
  • Mind the weather: The game features dynamic weather and time of day. If you get caught in the rain, remember to activate your windshield wipers to maintain visibility.
