Game description:

Tecmo Cup Football Game is a soccer title for the NES, developed and published by Tecmo and released in Europe in 1992 (as Tecmo Cup Soccer Game in North America). It began life in Japan as a Captain Tsubasa tie-in, and for the Western release the manga’s cast was swapped out for original characters, with the story following young player Robin Field as he works his way up from junior league football to the World Cup. What set it apart from other sports games of its era was its “Cinematic Soccer” system: rather than controlling players directly during a match, you choose actions like pass, shoot, and dribble from menus, and the outcome plays out on screen as a short animation.

How to play

Guide Robin Field’s career through a season structure of junior league matches building up to the World Cup, picking up new teammates and managing your squad’s skill levels between games. During matches, use the D-pad (arrow keys) to move through the action menus, and the A and B buttons (Z and X) to confirm or cancel a selected play. Press Start (Enter) to confirm choices and advance text and menu screens, and Select (Shift) to move between team and squad management screens outside of matches.
