SWIV is a top-down, vertically scrolling shoot ’em up released for the Game Boy Color in 2001. A portable adaptation of the classic computer and 16-bit shooter, this single-player version lets you take control of either a combat helicopter or an armored attack Jeep. Though both vehicles share similar speed and armor stats, their movement differs significantly: the helicopter can fly over ground obstacles but is restricted to firing straight ahead, forcing you to choose the right machine for your playstyle.
How to Play
Your objective is to survive waves of enemy forces and defeat the boss at the end of each section to earn primary weapon upgrades. Use the Arrow Keys to pilot your vehicle and aim your attacks. Press Z or X to fire your weapon. Along the way, you can collect shield power-ups which grant temporary invincibility. You can also detonate your shield to unleash a screen-clearing blast when overwhelmed.
Tips
- Choose your vehicle carefully. The helicopter easily avoids ground obstacles, but the Jeep’s firing angles may be more advantageous depending on the stage.
- Save your shield detonation for moments when enemy projectiles leave you with no escape route, rather than burning it for invincibility.
