Super Street Fighter II: The New Challengers is the 1993 arcade fighting game by Capcom that refined the legendary World Warrior tournament. Running on the CP System II hardware, this update overhauls the character artwork, adds a new combo scoring system, and introduces four new playable fighters: the amnesiac Cammy, the Native American warrior T. Hawk, the Jamaican kickboxer Dee Jay, and the Bruce Lee homage Fei Long. This brings the roster to a massive 16 fighters, giving players far more matchup variety while rebalancing the returning characters for deeper competitive play.
How to Play
The objective is to deplete your opponent’s health bar in best-of-three rounds. The arcade controls translate to an 8-way joystick for movement and six buttons for attacks (three punches, three kicks). In the browser, you can move with the arrow keys and execute light, medium, and heavy attacks using your mapped action buttons. Special moves require specific joystick motions followed by an attack buttonโfor example, Ryu’s Hadouken is performed by rolling the directional pad from down to forward, then pressing a punch.
Tips
- Learn the new challengers: T. Hawk’s Mexican Typhoon grab has incredible range and priority, making him a devastating grappler. Cammy relies on her speed and Spiral Arrow to close the distance quickly.
- Utilize the combo system: This is the first game in the series to explicitly track and reward combos. Capitalize on a stunned opponent by linking jumping attacks into standing attacks, finished by a special move.
- Reversals: Performing a special move on the exact frame you recover from being knocked down or blocking an attack will trigger a “Reversal,” granting you invincibility frames to break out of opponent pressure.
