Game description:

Released by Sega in 1989 for the Genesis (Mega Drive in Japan), The Super Shinobi (known internationally as The Revenge of Shinobi) is a classic action platformer that redefined the ninja genre. Players control Joe Musashi as he embarks on a globe-trotting mission to dismantle the criminal syndicate “Neo Zeed” and rescue his captured bride, Naoko. Widely regarded as a pinnacle of the 16-bit era, it is celebrated for its precise combat, varied locations, and an iconic soundtrack composed by Yuzo Koshiro.

How to Play

Your objective is to navigate side-scrolling levels filled with enemy ninjas, soldiers, and powerful bosses. You must utilize your katana for close-quarters combat and shurikens for ranged attacks. You also have access to powerful “Ninjutsu” magic that can clear the screen of enemies, grant temporary invincibility, or improve your jump, though magic is limited per life and must be used strategically.

  • Move: Arrow Keys
  • Attack (Shuriken/Katana): X
  • Jump: C (Tap again in mid-air for a somersault)
  • Ninjutsu Magic: Z
  • Start/Pause: Enter

Tips

  • Master the Somersault: The double jump is crucial for reaching high areas. More importantly, throwing a shuriken at the peak of a somersault unleashes a spread of eight shurikens at once, dealing massive damage to bosses.
  • Choose Magic Wisely: You generally only get one Ninjutsu art per life. Save “Ikazuchi” (lightning) for tough bosses to absorb a few hits, or use “Mijin” (exploding) as a last resort when your health is critical, as it costs a life but deals devastating damage to enemies and restarts the level with full health.
  • Conserve Shurikens: While you start with a generous supply of throwing stars, they can run out. Let enemies approach and use your katana for close-range kills to save projectiles for distant threats.
