Streets of Rage II is a classic side-scrolling beat ’em up released for the Sega Master System in 1993. As an impressive 8-bit port of the 16-bit Mega Drive original, this version manages to preserve the intense brawling action and atmospheric levels the series is known for. Players choose from three playable charactersโAxel, Blaze, and Skateโas they battle through the syndicate’s thugs to rescue their friend Adam and take down Mr. X. While Max Thunder is absent in this demake, the game still features the distinct fighting styles, special moves, and varied enemy encounters that make it a standout title on the Master System.
How to Play
Choose your fighter and brawl your way through the city streets, defeating enemies to progress to the stage boss. Your character can walk, jump, grab enemies, and unleash devastating special moves.
- Movement: Arrow Keys
- Attack: Z
- Jump: X
- Special Move: Z + X simultaneously (consumes a small amount of health if it hits)
- Start / Pause: Enter
Tips
- Use the Special Move carefully: It’s an excellent “get out of jail free” card when surrounded, but since it drains your health upon a successful hit, spamming it will leave you vulnerable.
- Master the grapple: Walking directly into enemies initiates a grapple. From here, you can perform throws or pummel them. Throws are particularly useful as the tossed enemy will knock down other thugs behind you.
- Know your character: Skate is incredibly fast and can run by double-tapping the D-pad, making him great for hit-and-run tactics. Axel hits the hardest but is slower, while Blaze offers a balanced mix of speed, power, and range.
