Capcom and Arika brought the iconic fighting series into three dimensions with Street Fighter EX Plus Alpha, released for the PlayStation in 1997. This expanded home version of the arcade original features a mix of familiar World Warriors like Ryu and Chun-Li alongside bizarre new challengers such as Skullomania and Garuda. It retains the classic 2D fighting mechanics the franchise is known for while introducing polygonal graphics and dynamic camera angles for the first time.
How to Play
Defeat your opponent by draining their health bar before the timer runs out. Use the Arrow Keys to move, jump, crouch, and block. The PlayStation’s six-button fighting layout uses the face and shoulder buttons for three strengths of punches and kicks. In your browser, these are typically mapped to your keyboard’s letter keys like Z, X, A, S, Q, and W. Press Enter (Start) to pause or confirm selections, and Shift (Select) to add credits.
Tips
- Chain Super Combos: A defining feature of this entry is the ability to cancel one Super Combo directly into another. If you have enough super meter, you can string multiple Super Combos together to instantly drain a huge portion of your opponent’s health.
- Use Guard Breaks: You can spend one level of your super meter to perform a Guard Break. This is an unblockable attack that will shatter your opponent’s defense and leave them temporarily dizzy, setting them up for your most damaging combos.
- Explore the Roster: This updated home release includes hidden characters like Evil Ryu, Bloody Hokuto, and the Cycloid fighters right out of the gate. Take time to experiment with these unique combatants, as they have vastly different toolkits from the standard cast.
