Game description:

Squirrel King is a notable unlicensed platformer developed by Taiwanese studio Gamtec for the Sega Genesis. Heavily inspired by Capcom’s Chip ‘n Dale: Rescue Rangers for the NES, the game stars two suspiciously familiar chipmunk-like characters navigating colorful, oversized environments. It stands out in the retro bootleg scene for its surprisingly solid mechanics, and its engine was famously repurposed to create an unofficial port of Super Mario World for the Genesis.

How to Play

Your main method of attack is picking up and throwing crates scattered throughout the levels. You can also throw fireballs if you collect the right power-ups. The default Sega Genesis controls are mapped to your keyboard:

  • D-Pad (Arrow Keys): Move and duck
  • A / B (Z / X): Jump and pick up/throw crates
  • Start (Enter): Pause the game

Tips

  • Just like in the classic game it mimics, ducking while holding a crate allows you to hide inside it and deflect certain enemy attacks.
  • Keep an eye out for the fireball power-ups, which give you a much faster and more reliable ranged attack than relying solely on crates.
