Based on the iconic MAD Magazine comic strip, Spy vs. Spy is a classic split-screen action-strategy game released for the Sega Master System in 1985. Players take control of either the Black Spy or the White Spy, competing against each other in a frantic race to gather top-secret items hidden throughout a maze-like embassy. The defining feature of the game is its competitive sabotage; while searching furniture for the items needed to escape, you must continuously set deadly booby traps to blow up, electrocute, or crush your opponent before they do the same to you.

How to Play

Your objective is to locate four essential items—a passport, secret plans, money, and a key—store them in a briefcase, and escape through the exit door before the timer runs out. You can hinder the other spy by engaging in hand-to-hand combat or by placing hidden traps around the rooms.

• Movement: Use the arrow keys (D-pad) to navigate the rooms and climb ladders.
• Action (Button 1/Z): Press Z to search furniture, open doors, and attack with your baton during combat.
• Trapulator (Button 2/X): Press X to access your trap menu, then use the directional keys to select and arm various booby traps like bombs and spring-guns.

Tips

• Match Traps to Furniture: Different traps are designed for specific objects. Time bombs go in furniture, springs on doors, and buckets of water are placed above doorways. Pay close attention to avoid triggering your own traps.
• Counters and Defenses: Every trap has a specific counter-item hidden in the rooms. For example, carrying an umbrella protects you from the water bucket trap, while wire cutters disarm explosives on doors.
• Ambush the Briefcase Carrier: You do not need to find all the items yourself. If your opponent has gathered most of them, focus on setting traps near the exit or engaging them in combat to steal the fully loaded briefcase.
