Spelunker, originally created by Tim Martin and brought to the NES by Irem in 1985, is a notoriously challenging cave exploration game. You guide a fragile adventurer deep underground in search of treasure, navigating a massive cavern filled with bats, traps, and phantoms. The game is infamous for its punishing physicsโfalling even a fraction of your character’s height results in instant death. Despite this, it remains a methodical and rewarding platformer that demands precision and patience to master.
How to Play
Your objective is to descend through the twisting cave system, collecting keys to unlock doors while constantly managing your air supply. In the browser emulator, use the arrow keys to move and climb, Z to jump (A button), and X to use the flare gun to destroy ghosts (B button). Press Down + X to drop a bomb for clearing rocky barriers. Monitor your air meter and collect oxygen tanks to keep going.
Tips
- Respect the drop: The explorer is incredibly fragile. You must be completely on a ladder before climbing down, and jumping from even small ledges is lethal.
- Listen for the ghost: A distinct musical cue plays when a phantom is approaching. Face its direction and shoot a flare to defeat it before it reaches you.
- Run from bombs: The blast radius of your bombs is larger than it appears. Move far away immediately after dropping one to avoid getting caught in the explosion.
