Spelunker is a platform game developed by Micro Graphic Image in 1983 and brought to the NES, where it earned a reputation as one of the most unforgiving games of its era. You control a lone explorer descending into a deep mine, collecting treasures across multiple cave levels while managing a slowly depleting lamp and a limited supply of tools. The game’s defining feature is its brutal fall damage — even a drop of a few pixels kills instantly — making every rope, ladder, and ledge a decision that demands full attention.
How to Play
Your goal is to reach the elevator at the bottom of each cave level. Collect gems along the way, and use bombs and anti-ghost spray to deal with hazards. The lamp fuel gauge drains steadily, so move with purpose.
| Arrow keys | Move / climb ropes and ladders |
| X | Jump (NES A button) |
| Z | Use item — bombs or anti-ghost spray (NES B button) |
| Enter | Start |
| Shift | Select |
Tips
- Grip every rope and ladder all the way down — jumping off even at the lowest point counts as a fatal fall.
- Trigger anti-ghost spray the moment a ghost appears; they respawn endlessly, so deal with them quickly and keep moving.
- Watch the lamp gauge. When fuel runs low you have a narrow window to reach a refill point or the level exit.
