Special Criminal Investigation (also known as S.C.I.) is a 1989 arcade racing shooter from Taito, the direct sequel to 1988’s Chase H.Q. Detectives Tony Gibson and Raymond Broady return, but swap seats — Broady now drives a red Nissan 300ZX Z32 Turbo while Gibson rides shotgun with a mounted gun, taking radio tip-offs from dispatcher Karen. Where the original relied purely on ramming, S.C.I. lets you fire directly at the fleeing suspect’s car, adding a second way to bring down its damage meter before the clock runs out.
How to Play
Each mission drops you behind a wanted car with a countdown timer running; catch up, then ram it or open fire to wear down its damage gauge before time expires. A nitrous boost lets you close the distance fast when the gap grows too wide. Steer and accelerate with the arrow keys, fire with Z, and trigger the nitrous boost with X; Enter starts a game and Shift inserts a coin.
Tips
- Switch between ramming and shooting rather than relying on one — combining both wears down a suspect’s damage meter faster than either alone.
- Save the nitrous boost for when a criminal car pulls away instead of burning it early; closing the gap matters more than raw top speed.
- Watch the timer as closely as the damage gauge — running out of time ends the chase even if the criminal car is nearly beaten.
