Spatter is a 1984 Sega arcade maze game, released in Japan as Sanrin San-Chan (“Tricycle-San”). You steer a young boy riding a tricycle around a maze of elevated roads that circle a castle high in the sky, racing to collect flowers scattered through the maze before the enemies catch you.
How to Play
The goal on each stage is to pick up every flower in the maze while dodging the vehicles patrolling the roads: rival go-karts, propeller-driven robots, and toy bulldozers. Get boxed in by one and it costs you a life, but the tricycle isn’t defenseless — ride into one of the fences lining the track and it becomes a battering ram, letting you knock an enemy clean off the road. You can also jump the tricycle over an oncoming enemy if you time it right and have nowhere else to go.
Clear enough flowers and the game drops into a bonus round: the view switches from overhead to a side-on platform screen, where you dodge falling droplets and climb to hand a flower to a girl waiting on a high platform.
Controls: 8-way joystick to steer the tricycle, with two action buttons for jumping and using the fence-ram move.
