Space Echo is a 1980 arcade bootleg of the classic fixed shooter Speak & Rescue (also known as Stratovox). Played directly in your browser, this early arcade title is historically significant because the original hardware was the first arcade machine to feature synthesized human speech. Players defend a base from waves of alien attackers while attempting to rescue kidnapped astronauts, complete with classic robotic voice samples.
How to play
Your objective is to shoot down the alien saucers before they can abduct the astronauts from the surface. If an alien grabs an astronaut, you must destroy the ship before it reaches the top of the screen to save them. The arcade controls are mapped to your keyboard: use the Arrow keys to move your ship left and right, and press Z or X to fire at the invading fleet. Insert coins with Shift and start the game with Enter.
Tips
- Prioritize the aliens that have grabbed an astronaut; you earn bonus points for saving an abductee in mid-air.
- Listen to the voice synthesis cues, as they will alert you when an astronaut is in danger or when a wave is complete.
