Soul Blazer is an action-RPG developed by Quintet and published by Enix for the SNES in 1992. As a divine avatar sent by the Master, your task is to restore the ruined Freil Empire by defeating monsters in various lairs. With each monster lair you clear, you release the captured souls of people, animals, and even plants, slowly rebuilding the towns and unlocking new areas to explore.
How to Play
Your objective is to explore dungeons, clear out monster lairs to resurrect the world above, and defeat the boss of each region. Use the arrow keys to move and the Z, X, A, and S keys (mapped to the SNES face buttons) to swing your sword, cast magic, and interact. Enter acts as Start, and Shift acts as Select. As you resurrect towns, return frequently to speak with the newly freed souls and gather equipment.
Tips
- Master the crab-walk: You can lock your facing direction to strafe by holding the L or R shoulder buttons (often mapped to Q or W). This is essential for attacking enemies from a safe distance or moving while defending.
- Equip magic strategically: Magic is cast using your soul companion and costs gems gathered from defeated enemies. Different spells orbit you or shoot in different directions, so swap your equipped magic based on the boss or room layout.
- Talk to everyone: Don’t just speak to the humans. Resurrected animals, plants, and even furniture can offer hints, open new paths, or provide essential items for your quest.
