Sonic the Hedgehog Vol.2 is an ambitious NES ROM hack that transforms the infamous Somari the Adventurer bootleg into a genuine 8-bit Sonic experience. Rather than settling for the sluggish Mario-based physics of the original pirate cart, this fan project completely overhauls the game’s engine. It introduces proper momentum-based platforming, revamped level layouts, custom animations, and an excellent chiptune soundtrack that makes the Sega mascot feel right at home on Nintendo’s classic hardware.
How to Play
The objective is the classic Sonic formula: race through each zone, collect rings to protect yourself from damage, and defeat Dr. Robotnik at the end of the acts. This browser-based emulator uses standard NES controls:
- Movement: Arrow Keys (D-Pad)
- Jump: Z or X (A / B buttons)
- Start/Pause: Enter
- Select: Shift
Tips
- Unlike the original Somari, this hack restores Sonic’s spin dash. Hold Down and press the jump button repeatedly to charge it up and burst through enemies or up steep slopes.
- Rings are your lifeblood; as long as you hold at least one ring, taking a hit won’t instantly defeat you. Prioritize grabbing a few scattered rings immediately after taking damage.
