Released in 1991 by Sega, Sonic the Hedgehog is the defining action platformer of the Sega Genesis. Built around momentum-based physics and striking speed, it challenges you to guide Sonic through iconic zones to stop Dr. Robotnik. Unlike traditional platformers, your speed is both a weapon and a hazard, requiring you to master slopes, loops, and springs while navigating dangerous obstacles.
How to play
Your objective is to sprint through each zone, overcome Dr. Robotnik’s robotic badniks, and reach the signpost at the end of the act. As long as you carry at least one golden ring, you will survive a hit, though your rings will scatter. To defeat enemies, jump on them or roll into them while moving at high speeds.

Tips
- Keep one ring: Even if you drop all your rings, rushing to grab just one before they disappear will keep you alive against the next hit.
- Momentum is key: Rolling down a slope builds far more speed than running. Press down while running to curl into a ball.
- Special Stages: Finish an act with at least 50 rings and jump into the giant ring at the end to enter the rotating Special Stage and hunt for a Chaos Emerald.
