Son Son is a 1984 arcade platformer from Capcom, loosely based on the classic Chinese novel Journey to the West. You play as SonSon, a monkey boy modeled on the Monkey King, as he fights his way across six-tiered, auto-scrolling stages full of demons and mythological creatures to reach Buddha. A second player can join as SonSon’s companion TonTon.
How to play
The screen scrolls automatically and only stops when a major enemy shows up. SonSon and TonTon walk their platform on their own; pushing up or down makes them jump to the floor above or below, so most of the skill is in timing floor changes and dodging rather than running. Their only attack is a short-range projectile fired from a staff, so you need to close some distance before an enemy is in range.
- Arrow Keys â move / jump between platforms
- Z â attack (fire projectile)
Tips
- Enemies move between floors on a fixed rhythm, not randomly â watch a wave once before engaging and their pattern becomes easy to dodge.
- Collect six small food items (fruit, fries, tempura) to spawn a large bonus item, and grab a POW icon to turn every enemy on screen into a points-carrying carrot.
- Your shot only covers about half the screen’s width, so don’t waste it firing at range â wait until an enemy is close enough to actually connect.
