Skull Fang is a fast-paced vertical shoot ’em up released for the Arcade by Data East in 1996. The third and final entry in the Vapor Trail and Wolf Fang trilogy, it sets itself apart by putting you in the cockpit of advanced fighter jets with direct control over your flight speed. Instead of the screen dictating the pace, you manually shift gears to speed up or slow down, dodging enemy squadrons and battling massive mechanical bosses.
How to Play
Select from four different jets and pilots, each with their own weapon loadouts, and battle your way through hostile territory. Your primary objective is to survive the stage and destroy the boss at the end. You can choose different throttle modes before launchingโAuto-Scroll plays like a traditional shooter, while manual modes let you control the screen’s scrolling speed to rush past hazards or take a tactical approach. Use your standard fire to clear the skies, deploy bombs for heavy damage, and execute flight maneuvers like side thrusts to evade incoming fire.
- Movement: Arrow Keys
- Action Buttons: Z / X / C
- Insert Coin: Shift
- Start: Enter
Tips
- Master the Throttle: If you choose manual speed control, slowing down gives you more reaction time in dense bullet patterns, while speeding up helps you close the distance on evasive targets.
- Strategic Bombing: Don’t wait until you’re about to be destroyed to use your bombs. They are excellent for clearing out durable enemies before they can flood the screen with projectiles.
