Sid Meier’s Pirates! is a pioneering open-world action and strategy game released for DOS by MicroProse Software in 1984. Set in the 17th-century Caribbean, players take command of a pirate ship to navigate the high seas, engaging in sword fights, naval battles, trading, and seeking out buried treasure while balancing the political tensions of European colonial powers.
How to play
The objective is to build your wealth, reputation, and land holdings before you age and are forced to retire. Gameplay is divided between sailing the world map, engaging in real-time tactical ship combat, and dueling enemy captains in fencing mini-games. For this DOS version, use the numeric keypad to steer your ship on the map and choose the direction of your attacks and parries during sword fights. To play in full screen, press Right Alt + Enter.
Tips
- Pay attention to the wind direction during naval battles; having the weather gauge (being upwind of the enemy) gives you a significant maneuvering advantage.
- Choose your initial era and nationality carefully, as some starting scenarios offer much easier routes to early wealth than others.
- Visit taverns frequently to gather rumors about treasure fleets, pirate hunters, and the whereabouts of your lost family members.
