Game description:

Shougi Zanmai is a classic Japanese chess (Shogi) game released for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES) in 1995. Designed for enthusiasts of the traditional board game, it features a top-down view of the Shogi board with standard rules and piece movements. As a Japan-exclusive title, the interface and menus are in Japanese, offering an authentic 16-bit virtual board experience for players familiar with the game’s mechanics.

How to Play

The objective is to capture the opponent’s king. Play follows standard Shogi rules, including the unique mechanic where captured pieces can be dropped back onto the board to fight for your side. Use the following default browser controls for the SNES:

  • D-pad (Arrow Keys): Move the board cursor
  • A Button (Z Key): Select a piece or confirm a move/drop
  • B Button (X Key): Cancel your selection
  • Start (Enter): Pause the game or bring up the menu

Tips

  • Take advantage of the “drop” rule. Captured opponent pieces are added to your hand and can be placed on almost any empty square to launch surprise attacks.
  • Protect your promoted pieces. When your pieces reach the farthest three ranks of the board, they gain enhanced movement; losing them gives your opponent a powerful piece they can drop.
