Game description:

Shougi Meikan ’92 (Shogi Directory ’92) is a unique educational strategy game released by Hector for the Famicom (NES) in 1992. Rather than playing against a computer opponent, this game serves as an interactive archive of professional Shogi matches. Playable directly in your browser, it features historical game records ranging from the end of the Edo period up to major title matches from 1990.

How to play

The game offers two primary ways to experience professional Shogi. In Watch Mode, you can automatically or manually play through recorded matches, analyzing high-level strategies at your own pace. In Explanation Mode, the match pauses at critical moments and challenges you to identify the ideal move from multiple choices, providing explanations for the correct answers. Use the D-pad to navigate menus and the board, and press the A or B buttons to confirm selections (mapped to arrow keys and Z/X in the browser, with Enter/Shift for Start/Select).

Tips

  • Use Watch Mode first to familiarize yourself with professional game flow and opening strategies before testing yourself in Explanation Mode.
  • When in Explanation Mode, take your time to analyze the board position; the multiple-choice options often highlight different valid tactical approaches, even if only one is considered the “ideal” professional move.
