Shining Force II is a genre-defining tactical RPG released for the Sega Genesis in 1993 by Sonic Co. and SEGA. Unlike many contemporary strategy games, it gives you the freedom to explore towns and a sprawling world map, uncovering secrets and recruiting unique characters to join the Shining Force on their quest to stop the ancient evil Zeon.
How to play
In battle, you command an army across grid-based maps where positioning and terrain are key to survival. Characters take turns based on their agility. Use the Arrow keys to navigate the world and tactical grid. Press Z or S to open menus, select targets, and confirm actions, and X to cancel. Press Enter to start or pause.
Tips
- Delay promotions: While you can promote characters at level 20, waiting until level 40 maximizes their stat growth, making them significantly stronger for the endgame.
- Search everywhere: Take time to explore towns and search bookcases, barrels, and walls. You can uncover hidden items like Mithril, which is essential for forging the best weapons.
- Strategic retreat: If a battle is going poorly or you want to grind for experience, use the hero’s Egress spell to retreat to the nearest church while keeping all the experience you’ve earned.
