Shin Jinrui – The New Type is a prehistoric vertical-scrolling shooter developed by Hudson Soft and released for the Famicom in 1987. Later released in North America as Adventures of Dino Riki, the game blends traditional shoot-’em-up mechanics with platforming elements as you guide a caveman through a hostile ancient world. Published in Japan under Ricoh’s “Rix Soft” label, it also famously featured a tie-in with Japanese professional wrestler Riki Choshu.
How to Play
Your objective is to survive vertically scrolling stages filled with dinosaurs, ancient enemies, and treacherous terrain. Because it incorporates platforming, you must constantly juggle shooting enemies and leaping over chasms. Use the D-pad (Arrow keys) to move in eight directions, press A (Z/X) to jump over hazards, and press B (Enter/Shift) to throw weapons like rocks, axes, and boomerangs.
Tips
- Prioritize collecting speed-boosting wings early on. Your starting movement speed is very slow, making it difficult to dodge enemies and cross wide gaps.
- The boomerang is an incredibly versatile weapon upgrade, as it covers a wide area and can hit enemies on its return path.
- Never linger at the bottom of the screen. The auto-scrolling camera will crush you instantly if you get trapped behind an obstacle.
