Shadowland, originally released in Japan as Yōkai Dōchūki, is a 2D side-scrolling platformer released for arcades by Namco in 1987. You play as Tarosuke, a mischievous young boy who has been banished to the underworld as punishment for his pranks. To determine his final fate, he must battle his way through five regions of hell to reach the Buddhist deity Yama, fending off spirits and demons along the way.
How to Play
Your objective is to guide Tarosuke safely through the underworld's stages. You defeat enemies by firing “Ki” (spirit energy) bullets, which can be charged for a stronger attack. Instead of a traditional score, you collect money from defeated enemies to purchase helpful items in shops. For the standard arcade controls mapped to your keyboard, use the Arrow Keys to move, Z to fire Ki bullets, and X to jump. Press Enter for Start and Shift to insert coins.
Tips
- Charge your attacks: Holding down the fire button unleashes a more powerful Ki blast, which is essential for taking out tougher enemies or groups of spirits quickly.
- Manage your money: Don't just rush through the levels; take the time to defeat enemies and collect currency. The items you can buy are crucial for surviving later regions.
- Mind your choices: The game features five different endings depending on how you play. The amount of money you collect and the number of enemies you defeat will directly impact Yama's final judgment.
