Samurai Shodown V Special (released in Japan as Samurai Spirits Zero Special) is a 2D weapon-based fighting game developed by Yuki Enterprise and published by SNK Playmore for the Neo Geo in 2004. It refines the same year’s Samurai Shodown V, rebalancing the cast and swapping out the supporting characters Sankuro and Yumeji for series villains Amakusa Shiro Tokisada and Zankuro Minazuki, while the previously hidden character Poppy becomes directly playable as Mizuki Rashojin. This particular build is the game’s first Neo Geo AES release, censored in the wake of Japan’s 2004 Sasebo school stabbing: SNK Playmore stripped out the generic fatalities and toned down the finishing Overkill moves before the cartridge shipped, a change later partly reversed for the “less censored” second release.
How to Play
Pick a swordsman and reduce your opponent’s health to zero in a best-of-three duel. Land enough damage while your Rage Gauge is full and you can unleash the Zetsumei Ougi (Overkill Move), a devastating finisher that can end the round outright against a badly hurt opponent â though in this censored build the move is noticeably toned down compared to later releases.
- Movement: Arrow Keys
- Light Slash: Z
- Medium Slash: X
- Kick: C
- Dodge/Movement: V
- Start: Enter
- Insert Coin: Shift
Tips
- Build your Rage Gauge, not just damage: a full gauge is what arms the Zetsumei Ougi for a comeback finish, so play for chip damage even when a straight knockout looks out of reach.
- Don’t force the Overkill Move: it has real startup and whiffing it leaves you wide open, so only go for it once your opponent is already committed to an attack or badly cornered.
